Billy_Vance_MFH_and_huntsmanHow many huntsmen are hunting hounds at eighty years of age? Or to add a twist to that question, how many huntsmen having achieved that age have already hunted hounds for the previous fifty seasons?

Billy Vance, Joint-Master and huntsman of the Fermanagh Harriers, has achieved this milestone. To see him hunting hounds is inspiring, humbling, and brings home just how lucky we all are to be able to follow great horsemen like him across the countryside.

Great story and hunt report. I do have a question, what is a "trencher fed pack"?
# Norman Fine 2012-01-17 20:30
A trencher fed pack is a pack of hounds that do not lodge together in a single kennel. Rather, they are farmed out, often to hunting farmers in the area, and brought together when a meet is scheduled.

I have heard from my neighbors that many of the farmers in the small town I live used to hunt in a similar fashion. Thank you for the explanation.

The difference there is that the farmers probably owned their own hounds and brought them together with others to night hunt. A trencher fed pack is a true pack, owned or organized by the hunt, but distributed among the country people for their everyday care.

The Lakeland Packs (Foot Hounds) still traditionally put their hounds out to walk during the summer months, and the Huntsman will pursue work on the sheep farms.
