The Derrydale Press Foxhunters' Library
A collection of thirty-two foxhunting stories populated by horses, hounds, challenging obstacles, and unforgettable personalities. Accompany Norman Fine to Ireland, England, Canada, and across the United States as he meets, hunts with, and is educated by the foremost Masters, huntsmen, hound breeders, and sporting historians of the last fifty years. Fine’s stories, most of them previously published in the U.S. and England, are connected chronologically by new material in which the author explains how he came to meet these larger-than-life characters, what role they played in his development from horseman to foxhunter, and how he came to hunt with their hounds.
Norman Fine is the creator and former editor of Covertside magazine, a publication of the Masters of Foxhounds Association of America. He is also editor of The Derrydale Press Foxhunters’ Library. His articles on foxhunting have appeared inCovertside, The Chronicle of the Horse, and CLASSIC magazine in this country, and in Baily’s, Hounds magazine, and Hunting with Country Illustrated in England. He has hunted with more than fifty foxhound packs in the United States, Ireland, and England and lives on a horse farm in Millwood, Virginia.
Foxhunting Adventures is available from Millwood House, Ltd.
Reviews for Foxhunting Adventures
"...wry and clever, making the reader feel as if he’s galloping along in the field and sharing the joke.... There are a few laugh-out-loud moments, and even though each chapter is only a few pages, Fine conveys the characters and mood of the day impeccably....a quite reasonable capping fee for a priceless hunting adventure."
The Chronicle of the Horse
"You’ll feel as though you met every person, horse, and hound, been over every obstacle, and faced every challenge.... Read the full collection in one sitting or take your time and slowly enjoy the ride.... You’ll be fully entertained, enlightened, and enriched."
In & Around Horse Country
“[Fine’s] writings fairly capture the reader and take him headlong o’er the fences and the hedges of hunts from North America to the old sod of Ireland and England.”
From the Foreword by James L. Young, ex-MFH, Orange County Hunt Marshall, Virginia
"I just love it! I hope every foxhunter reads it. I've started reading it through again. It's so lovely, and it brings back so many mermories."
Mrs. Thady (Anne) Ryan, Atawhai, Nelson, New Zealand
"Most of the stories are about a specific day of hunting as a guest with packs in North America and a few in Ireland and the UK. The vivid descriptions are in first person, and the reader really feels like he is there with the author!
"For regulars to the sport, this is a must read! For those who rarely venture outside of their own hunt club’s territory, this book gives insight as to how others may enjoy a good day of sport on horseback. For those who ride but do not often hunt, it shows how much fun foxhunting can be!"
