Members of Foxhunting Life's Panel of Experts respond to a reader's question. (Clockwise from the top: Masters and huntsmen Marion Thorne, Hugh Robards, Jerry Miller, and Marty Wood.)

A  reader asks, “If a member who has quit the club returns to cap, is it appropriate for he or she to wear the colors of that club?”

A good question—simple and practical—yet I couldn’t think of any published rule of attire that addressed the subject.

I have always wondered about staff who are hunting in another hunt's field, as well, if colors are appropriate.

I believe one needs to be invited by the Masters, to do so.

As for the issue of former members right to wear colors, the Goshen Hounds by-laws clearly state that colors are awarded for life and can always be worn in the Goshen Hunt field. We really welcome the return of former members in colors.

When away at a joint meet, the visitor should always ask permission of the Masters to wear colors. Frankly, at Goshen it is always granted. Where is the harm? In addition, it is a pleasure for me to quickly recognize an experienced visitor,
